Health Benefits of Knitting

There are many good reasons why to learn knit,  in my personal experiences, the most important are the health benefits. The practice of this art can cause us to experience a sense of relaxation, recreation, concentration helping us to relieve many emotional symptoms.  Doing it  in companion with  other people, allow us to express ourselves, share ours experiences or achievements, and laugh together, helping us to reduce anxiety states. However doing it alone also help us meditate and organizes our thoughts.

Here are some of the benefits of this practice.

1. Knitting increases serotonin secretion.

Studies show that knitting helps to release serotonin in the body, which brings with it many of the health benefits. Serotonin is a natural antidepressant. Many people say that knitting is a great complement to conventional therapy; there are countless reasons for this and the release of serotonin is one of them.

2. Knitting offers "forget the sorrows".

Mental Health and physical problems or worries cannot be underestimated. Distracting  our negative thoughts can help to reduce depression, anxiety and  worries. It does it by reducing the  ruminating thought cycles in our mind.  Any time you experience stress, anxiety or feeling overwhelm,  pick up your needle and focus on a Knitting project.

3. Colour therapy has proven benefits, it includes the colorful aspect of the yarn.

You want to increase happiness? Experiment  working with yellow. Want to relax? Try working with a soothing blue yarn. Feeling low energy? Pick up some red yarn. Of course, there are many details to learn about chromotherapy, and you can delve into them if you like, but you can also trust your instinct when it comes to finding the colours of yarn that make you feel good. Pull out a few skeins of yarn, one at a time, and watch them long enough to see what noticeable change they have in your mood. This information can help you get out of any rut.

4. Knitting is considered an anti-stress therapy.

Knitting helps reduce stress hormones and blood pressure, while increasing the level of endorphins and dopamine. Dopamine is  a neurotransmitter released by the cerebellum when we engage in a pleasurable activity, bringing us a lot of desirable sensation.

5. Doing activities, like creating something beautiful with our hands increases our self-esteem.

There are days when we feel useless, whether it's depression, chronic pain or we are simply "down" not feeling like doing anything. Knitting is a craft you can do laying in your bed with the minimum effort.  And yet, knitting allows you to create beautiful and functional items that you can use, give as gifts or sell. It's a great way to combat the sadness of not being able to do anything useful.

You don't need to have a reason to knit, beside the fact other that you enjoy it. However, it is good to know that this craft has many excellent benefits.

Let's knit!
